This weekend, a 19-story-high crane broke away from the apartment tower it was attached to and collapsed, killing 4 construction workers and injuring 24 others, including 11 first responders.

Several people complained to the Buildings Department about unsafe violations that were taking place on the construction site, specifically those dealing with the crane.

While comforting his fellow New Yorkers, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, “Do I think that you should worry if there’s a crane across the street? No, this is such a rare thing that I don’t think we should worry about it. Every large construction site has violations.”

Apparently, the city had issued 13 violations in the past two years to this construction site. Yes, accidents happen, but when this many violations have been issued, something more drastic should have taken place. Sources say the crane was inspected the day before the collapse happened.

I hope the right people really investigate what happened when the crane was inspected and if there were any negligence, I hope the people responsible are held accountable. When people die, you can’t just say “mistakes happen.” Take responsibility!
